2019 Subaru Forester Awarded 5 Star ANCAP Safety Rating
When the 2019 Subaru Forester was first unveiled on 28 March 2018 at the New York International Auto Show it was only a matter of time before it was awarded a coveted 5-star ANCAP safety rating. The rating for this latest Forester makes it the fourth generation of this model to achieve the maximum rating. According to James Goodwin, CEO of ANCAP “The Forester scored full points for physical protection of child occupants in both side and frontal impact tests”.
What Are ANCAP Safety Ratings?
ANCAP safety ratings are determined based on a series of internationally recognised, independent crash tests and safety assessments – involving a range of destructive physical crash tests, an assessment of on-board safety features and equipment, and performance testing of active collision avoidance technologies.
The ANCAP safety test has four (4) main areas of assessment, which the Forester scored top marks in, these include:
- 94% for Adult Occupant Protection;
- 86% for Child Occupant Protection;
- 80% for Vulnerable Road Users; and
- 78% for Safety Assist Systems.
The Best Family SUV
In addition to keeping occupants safe and having excellent pedestrian protection, the Subaru Forester also received top marks for side impact and pole tests. This does not come as any surprise either considering the previous 2018 Subaru Forester won the award for best Small SUV, beating out Skoda Karog, Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross and the Volkswagon Tiguan for its compact size, superior torque and exceptional comfort. According to Drive Magazine, the Subaru Forester is nimble and practically “glides” around sharp corners compared to its competitors thanks to a legendary all-wheel-drive system.
High Safety Chassis
Like current Subaru models, the 2019 model year moved the Forester to the Subaru Global Platform. The platform is the sophisticated infrastructure underpinning all current, future models (except the Subaru BRZ), and makes for high chassis strength, lighter weight, better rolling resistance and even more responsive steering.
Safety Assist Features
In addition to a new high strength chassis, the Subaru Forester contains a legion of safety assist features. One safety assist feature is adaptive radar cruise control. The system has four (4) four different distance settings to keep you as close as far from the vehicle in front of you as needed, based on traffic conditions, and auto-hold brake functions when stopped, while the lane-keep assist program quickly and efficiently guides you back into your lane if it senses that you’re swerving.
The Blind Spot Detection System includes prominent orange LEDs on the external mirrors, alerting you when an imminent lane-change is not safe. If that was not enough Subaru’s award-winning EyeSight active safety system, which includes Autonomous Emergency Braking, Pedestrian Detection, Forward Collision Warning and Lane Departure Warning, also received high marks, while the company’s Vision Assist system, separate from EyeSight, includes features such as Blind Spot Monitoring, Reverse Automatic Braking and Lane Change Assist.
Furthermore, Subaru has made waves in the industry with its state-of-the-art facial recognition system, which not only will remember your climate control, mirror and seat position preferences, but also has the ability to warn motorists if it senses you are displaying signs of drowsiness. Reverse automatic braking, which can prevent accidents at low speeds, and it is the only car in the line-up with a system technologically advanced enough that it can recognize and address changes to brake lights on cars ahead. The combination of a new rigid chassis, full-time all-wheel drive, and technological safety inclusions, inspires confidence in motion, and it’s no wonder why the 2019 Subaru Forester received 5 Star ANCAP safety rating.
